  Association News:

Egyptian Youth Get Wet

A group of some thirty enthusiastic college students who are members of the Environmental Conservation Club of Ain Shams University, (Egypt's second largest University), visited the Red Sea during the last week of January accompanied by a team of the University faculty.

One of the main objectives of the Association is to introduce and encourage Egyptian youth to take up SCUBA diving and begin to focus on it as a great sport and recreational activity as well as to start considering it as a credible and respectable career option.

With this in mind, the Association hosted the visiting students and organized for them to have a two day orientation to SCUBA diving, including theory overview, skill sessions and introductory dives from a boat under the supervision of Mr. Alaa A. Galil - NAUI CD - and U.F Association Board Member.
Following this two day program, the visitors expressed their thanks and appreciation and were keen to do more.
They caught the bug and we were happy to be part of it.

Volunteer rangers program launched

With over one thousand kilometers of pristine coastline and over a hundred diving and snorkeling sites, catering for thousands of people and hundreds of boats every day of the year, the task of environmental monitoring and control is by any standards a colossal one. With this in mind, the Association is joining forces with the Red Sea Protectorate office in Hurghada headed by Dr. Mahmoud Hanafi and are together launching a volunteer rangers program in the Red Sea Governorate.

The program will recruit in its initial stage some 20-30 volunteer rangers from the ranks of diving and snorkeling professionals (Dive Master and Instructors) working in the Red Sea from El Gouna to Marsa Alam as well as safari boats.
The selected candidates will undergo an environmental orientation work shop at the Red Sea protectorate offices, will be briefed on their mission and issued official rangers' credentials.
The objectives of this program are:

- increase the level of environmental awareness and strengthen proper environmental behavior amongst operator and visitors.

- monitor and report any violations to ensure that swift action is taken by the proper authorities.

- conduct ongoing surveys of status of mooring buoys and report any defects or inadequacies as well as submit suggestions for new mooring buoys to create new dive sites.

We believe this to be a very positive step and we urge all parties (stakeholder and visitors alike) to lend their support and cooperation to the rangers for a better Red Sea.

RSDASS ID Card Requirements

The Red Sea Association for Diving & Watersports has been running a very succesfull scheme for several years whereby everyone working in the diving busness - guiding, managing or instructing is issued with an ID card.
No diving boat is allowed to operate with certified divers unless an accredited Divemaster/Instructor (with valid RSDASS ID card) is on board. This is now a law ratified by the Red Sea Governorate.

Do not thing of having an ID card as simply a means for beaucrats to keep track of you, it means unqualified Guides and Instructors without any professional certifications should not find work in the region, making it easier for you to find employment.
Also, If you have any genuine complaints or grievances against your employer, (divecentre, safari boat), you will find a friendly team at the Association office (next to Bulls Restaurant) who may be able to help and advise you.

This last point in particular makes having this card worthwhile.

To obtain the ID card as a scuba diving professional, applicants must provide RSDASS with the following:

1. A complete and clearly filled out application form from the RSDASS office.

2. 2 passport photos.

3. A passport photocopy including current visa page (the ID card will expire with the visa).

4. Copies of diving professional qualifications (in active status, renewed or valid).

5. A copy of liability insurance, personal or through the dive center / live aboard (if available but not necessary).

6. A copy of a medical certificate not more than a year old, (general doctor will do, stating that you are in good health to dive).
