SSDM Annual Report
It is a pleasure to bring you up todate with what has been going on this side of the Sinai this past year. Your trust and support during the last few months have been greatly appreciated. The number of members has reached 80 and is increasing daily. Soon, we will have all Diving and Marine operations in The South Sinai joining as members of the SSDM.

The association has achieved several goals since its registration, please find below an update:
1. March 2003; Registration of our Association as a NGO.
2. SSDM board sets up the office of SSDM and make sure that it is functioning professionally.
3. SSDM slogan is to be "SIMPLY YOURS"
4. April; SSDM became a Permanent member of the Supreme Technical Committee of the Ministry of Tourism (STCMT) setting rules and regulations concerning our businesses.
5. SSDM launched the SSDM Web Page at www.southsinai.org
6. SSDM is asked officially by Ministry of Tourism (MOT) to evaluate Diving Centers.
7. SSDM sets up the rules & regulations of the M.O.T. for Diving Centers, Marine Sports Centers, Diving & Safari Boats.
8. The Moorings project for the diving sites has the full support of your association.
9. SSDM organized in cooperation with RSDA and the STCMT a session in Parliament with the Parliament Committee of Tourism and Culture. Problems and suggested solutions were presented during the session.
10. September; Chamber of Tourism Establishments (CTE) nominated and elected 4 members from SSDM Board to establish the CTE Branch in South Sinai.
11. SSDM participated in the Mediterranean Travel Fair (MTF) from 10-13 September 2003.
12. October; Four SSDM board members are chosen to join the board of directors of the CTE Branch for Diving chaired by Dr. M. Saleh.
13. October; the M.O.T. ordered that the Inspection Committee approving Diving Centers is formed of three members, a member from MOT, a member from EULF, and a member from SSDM board, instead of the previous EULF single inspector.
14. November; the number of SSDM's members in March 2003 was 20, now increased to reach 75 members.
15. SSDM position about sales taxes being implemented on D.C. without a law is announced in both CTE and the parliament.

A meeting will be arranged with the minister of finance to clear this issue.
16. SSDM's request in writing to CTE to reconsider the high customs fees on diving equipment is passed along to the Prime Minister (PM). The P.M. agrees - after consulting with the MOT that exempting diving equipment from customs will be a positive push to the diving industry. The application steps of the exemption would have to pass through the parliament.
17. SSDM holds a meeting chaired by Mr. Adel Abdel Aziz, head of the Tourism Development Agency to study potentials of Diving & Marine activities marketing plans for overseas.
18. December; SSDM organized the First Annual Diving & Marine Activities Conference between SSDM board and the governmental authorities. The meeting was held in Hilton Dreams - Nama Bay. The Governor Gen. Mustafa Afifi supported the conference. The Governor attended the opening ceremony. His speech supporting the efforts of SSDM contained a list of responsibilities for SSDM both environmentally and professionally.
19. The Governor ordered that all Diving Centers & Marine Activities Centers to be members by March 2004 to insure and control services' quality.
20. SSDM joins its sister association in the Red Sea governorate - Red Sea Association - for a united publication.
21. SSDM position concerning The Search and Rescue (SAR) can be summarized in three major points:
a. SSDM and members appreciate the work and the addition SAR provides to the community and its service as a private business,
b. SSDM stands strongly against forcing Diving or Marine activities businesses to pay fees or contributions to a private business,
c. Joining SAR or using its services should be an option and a choice that a business can make, such as using the barge for example.

SSDM will have an official meeting with SAR and recommendations with the above mentioned guide lines will be raised with the Governor of South Sinai.
Your association is currently working on the following urgent short term projects:
1. Having all Dive and Marine Activities Operations within the SSDM.
2. Unite all Guides and Instructors within the SSDM.
3. Enhance communications with governmental officials.
4. Establish the final rules and regulations and standards for Marine activities operations and Safari boats.
5. Create a mechanism to handle complaints and violations of standards.
6. Sponsor and organize training programs for snorkelling guides, please let us know if you wish to participate.

The board wishes to thank you for supporting your association and urge you to interact with us with ideas, goals, tasks and dreams.
We are all looking forward to meeting you during the SSDM first birthday party on Thursday the 25th of March, 2004.

Together, we can make a difference; together we can make our dreams a reality.
