So you’ve just bought your new iPOD and you want to take it everywhere with you but you are worried about it getting scratched or wet. Well new from Peli is the i1010 case designed specifically for the iPOD 20, 40 and 60GB, iPOD Video, Shuffle and Nano, with a moulded rubber liner which will take any of these models.Think of the Pelican cases (Peli is the European, Middle East and African Headquarters of Pelican Products) that you often see people using for cameras, nitrox analysers, laptops etc, and then just shrink it down to iPOD size and there you have it – same quality just in a smaller package. When I received one of the first units to arrive in Egypt from Rafik at Divoos, I instantly loved it, and there was a small fight on the boat when everyone saw it!
Made of high-impact polycarbonate, combined with the shock absorbing rubber lining and strong latch, the i1010 is designed to protect your iPOD against knocks, drops and the weather. With an external earphone jack meaning that the case itself is totally sealed by the Nitrile ‘O’ ring, you can take your iPOD sailing, canoeing, skiing (!), or on the dive boat and be assured that it will be protected from any water spray and knocks. It only comes in a choice of white or black unlike the other cases from Peli, but this, I’m sure, will change over time. The i1010 retails for around $66 and so is a relatively small investment when compared to the price of a new iPOD should you break it.
The case, with iPOD inside, weighs in at about 185g, and with a positive buoyancy of 230g means that should you drop it in the water then it will float and remain water-tight. There is a handy pocket inside the lid to store your earphones when not using them, although due to it’s small size, you can only fit the standard iPOD phones in, so if you have some other ones which are slightly larger (like me) then they might be too large to allow the lid to close. Peli will be releasing soon (although not in Egypt for at least a while) the new i1030 case which is slightly larger to accommodate bigger earphones and chargers.
The case is a superb idea, certainly giving excellent protection to the iPOD itself, but just remember that the earphone socket on the outside, or your earphones themselves are not water-proof! Probably best if you don’t take it swimming then, and it certainly isn’t designed for underwater use before you think of diving with it! I would say the only downside to the case was that Peli could have thought to put a clear window in the lid so you can still see what tunes are playing so avoiding the need to constantly open it up every time you want to know the name of a song. Also, you need to set your iPOD up with a decent play list before closing the lid otherwise, again, you will find yourself opening it up every time you want to start a new album. Perhaps Peli could fit an external socket for a remote control on future models as well. The case also comes with a removable nylon webbing strap so you attach it to the shoulder of a rucksack or a belt when you are on the move.
On the information provided with the case which I received was a picture of a case being driven over by a 4x4. I thought of trying this with my VW Beetle, but then decided that I didn’t want to risk breaking my car’s suspension – I’ll have to take Peli’s word on that one!
As with all products manufactured by Peli, the i1010 case is covered under their Unconditional Guarantee – ‘You break it, we replace it ... forever’. Can’t really complain with that now!
For those people who cannot go anywhere without their music, but are worried about damaging their iPOD, the i1010 case is certainly a good investment – just make sure you put your name on it!!!
