Two years ago, we reported that the Travel Foundation, was working with Egyptian Tourist Authority to make Egypt known a safe destination for tourism. At the time they held a series of seminars and workshops, which were funded by their external programs.
Now we can report that they continue to make efforts in Egypt to promote responsible tourism. They focus their efforts on the marine world and deserts of the Sinai peninsula, with a focus on Sharm el Sheikh and Dahab. Both the desert and the ocean world in this area are particularly vulnerable.
The Travel Foundation conducts accredited training courses for snorkeling and wilderness guides. They learn to protect the area from environmental damage and how best to advise their clients. The qualification as a guide opens the door to employment for many who otherwise are not in a position to make a career in tourism. The scheme does not only help Egyptians and Bedouins understand the problems of their environment, but also provides employment and income opportunities for the local population.
